This chapter surveys the work of the Gilgul Ensemble, an contained theatre company established ... more This chapter surveys the work of the Gilgul Ensemble, an independent theatre company established by Barrie Kosky in 1991 to investigate Jewish identity, history and performance. Across the 6-year lifespan of the company, Gilgul created v works that cemented Kosky's growing reputation as a director and theatre-maker of uncommon vision and boldness. The authors, Yoni Prior and Matthew Delbridge, were members of the original ensemble and the chapter draws on interviews with past ensemble members to consider the idiosyncratic dramaturgy and collaborative working methods that forged the work, and the evolving stage linguistic communication that adult across the span of the works. The affiliate also reflects on the local and international cultural context out of which the work emerged, locating information technology in an historical moment when Australian (and peculiarly Melbournian) theatre artists were responding explicitly to the variety of the Australian population through investigations of narratives of migrati...

A 2nd text emerged as the effort of executing that action told on the trunk of the histrion in signs of exertion – weariness, breathlessness, sweat, strain in the vocalisation. Images of 'stoic endurance' in the frame of the piece knit the impact of the fictional history on the fictional trunk/character into the impact of the existent history/time on the real trunk/role player.

An account of a number of telematic performance projects devised in collaborations between Dutch ... more An account of a number of telematic performance projects devised in collaborations between Dutch and Australian university students. The initial prompt for using a telematic framework for devising functioning across remote locations was the desire to push button against a set of cultural, applied, temporal, spatial and institutional constraints imposed by, or present in, the locations in which we taught. The engagement with this framework, however, brought us hard up against a gear up of technological constraints which governed the stories we were able to tell, the ways in which the collaborative process was shaped and managed, and the formal and artful aspects of the performances that nosotros produced.

Few Australian actresses are offered the opportunity to test their mettle confronting the canon of European classic theatre, or to piece of work at the heart of an ongoing ensemble for more a decade. In this interview we talk over the office of actor training in Australia, the contribution of the ensemble to Australian theatre history, the changes in understanding around the idea of an ensemble, the lived experience of Australian actresses, and the place of the 'veteran' actress in the contemporary artistic and industrial environment.
