My goodness, this reminds me of Lenten suppers, afternoons when I was sick, and quiet moments with just my mom and me. But, you absolutely, positively must have frozen baby peas added to the recipe, and if you are feeling rich, then butter your toast before adding the creamed tuna. This is pure comfort food for me, it was something that really only my mom and I liked. The rest of the family are it, but only because there was nothing else. I loved it, and I still do, but my own children won't touch it. I still make this when I'm sad or lost; my mom has been dead for 20 years, but she's at the table with me when I serve myself this dish. Thank you for posting a happy memory for me.

Our stories sound much alike except my dad passed away and times were tough with just mom also in the 70's. She would make this, but she always added a can of peas. I liked it as a kid and then I made it for my kids, now it's just hubby and me at home and I still make it now and again. It's quick and cheap. I looked your recipe up today to see if I others added something special to make it better. When I read your recipe I though no need, but I did add half a chopped onion.

It's so funny but I made this just last night for dinner. I always thought I was the only person on earth that ate this growing up in the 70's. and then I just now stumbled upon the recipe on here today. I come from a huge catholic family and my mom made this probably once a week. We all loved it then as kids and most of my siblings still make this now as adults.. My mom always served this with white rice. She often made the creamed sauce from scratch but in a pinch you can substitute cream of mushroom soup which is just as tasty. I make it the same way my mom taught me with diced celery, peas, parsley and dill, I also use at least 3 cans of tuna with the water its packed in, this really boosts the flavor. This is a really forgiving recipe and you can use ingredients in any amounts that suit your own personal taste. I highly recommend this served with the white rice instead of toast.

thank you! I loved this growing up and was trying to find the recipe that uses milk and not condensed cream soups and this is it! The only change I make is to add fresh or frozen peas.
05/30/2015
I remember my grandmother making this for me when I was very young, but I couldn't find the recipe. This tastes exactly how I remembered it. Thank you for sharing it!
11/04/2015
I too ate this growing up and make it frequently still! The only real difference to mine is that I add celery seasoning. I'll try the peas next time!
06/24/2019
I found this recipe and decided to make it for my hubby, as he had never had this before. How sad really, he never experienced one of the ultimate comfort foods! This dish transported me back 40 years! Just like my mother's! My dear mother just turned 86 years young and guess what I'm making for the next family dinner!
01/26/2015
This was one of my favorite meals as a child. When my mom would ask what I wanted for dinner 9 times out if 10 this is what I wanted. Lol
11/15/2014
This reminds me of growing up in the 80's or having a tuna casserole. I made a couple of modifications to the recipe. I added 1/4 of a finely chopped onion and 1/4 of a finely chopped apple to the butter and caramelized them before adding the flour.
01/16/2018
My mom used to call this "sh** on a shingle". I think lots of us ate this growing up. Thanks for posting this recipe and bringing back good memories. =D
01/13/2015
Love this! Had this all the time growing up and was craving it this week. This is the exact recipe my mother would make, but depending on what we had laying around the house, she would sometimes throw in a handful of cheese or peas at the end. Also, super cheap to make which is always a plus
09/21/2017
Exactly as how I remembered when I was a kid. I always ate mine over mashed potatoes. I did use two 4 oz cans of drained tuna instead of one 5 oz can; it turned out to be the perfect amount of tuna to cream base. My mom also mentioned that she likes putting fresh grated Parmesan cheese into the cream base (before the tuna is added) for an extra layer of flavor. The people who can't get past the "look" of this dish are really missing out. Yum!
06/13/2019
This was a childhood favorite and still is also an amazing comfort food for me, so glad that there were no extra and unnecessary ingredients added that can sometimes ruin a great recipe
10/22/2017
This was a dish my mom made in the '60's when my dad was working late and it was just my sibs and mom. Dad..ah no way! This is "dressed up" from our version, no peas please and would you believe we put it over saltine crackers!!! Love it still and make it only when I'm home alone cuz no one else will touch it. That's OK with me. They don't know what they are missing!
10/10/2017
Another YES YES! vote for a well loved childhood comfort food memory. Coming home from school on a Friday afternoon...the whole house smelled like lemon pledge cause my Mom cleaned house on Fridays, and we always had this recipe of creamed tuna on toast served with pasta and tomato sauce. What a carbolicious and lovely memory! (PS She sometimes added onions.)
07/21/2018
Just like my mom used to make! I added frozen peas and carrots for color and texture, same as my mom did.
05/26/2015
I lost my old recipe so tried this one. So Good! My husband is eating it now and loves it. Thanks!
01/17/2018
Boy this brings back memories as a child. Tasted exactly the same!
01/10/2015
This isn't gourmet, but it is delicious. Like the other reviewers said, this was one of my mom's recipes that helped feed a large family on a small budget. I prefer it over a baked potato.
08/03/2018
I didn't have peas to add so I sauteed some celery in the butter before adding the flour. Turned out really good. Everyone had seconds.
05/13/2016
I use frozen baby peas.
03/03/2016
Family favorite with my kids and when I was a kid.
01/14/2015
This recipe as written is ok
12/26/2016
Amazing! My mom made this for me growing up in the 80s and 90s. I honestly thought she had made it up out of items in the pantry. The recipe is exactly like this, except she also adds a can of peas and serves it over mashed potatoes. It may be plain and simple, but it's my ultimate comfort food.
02/25/2018
My husband asked for cream tuna fish on toast. Never have I made it, so I found this recipe and away we went!! He said it brought back memories of childhood at his gramma's house
09/19/2017
Just like Mom used to make. It is good and thick and creamy.
05/26/2020
My mom made this all the time when I was growing up. She got the recipe from her mother in law who lived in New Hampshire. In New England they mostly made it on toast but my mom put it over rice. So happy I found your recipe. Never got it from my mom before she passed and I made this last night and it was delicious!! Tasted just like my mom's!
07/11/2017
My mom made this for me growing up in the 80s. Always my favorite when I was little. Even as an adult I ask her to make it for me. Guess I should learn how to make it myself but it's just not the same unless mom makes it.
09/30/2016
I searched for this just to see if my mom's recipe would be here. Your recipe as written is exactly the same. I've never met anyone else outside of my family that makes this. I loved it as a kid and now my 18 yr old daughter makes it all the time, sometimes better than I do.
09/17/2015
I love this recipe!! People tend to look down on meals like this but this has quickly become a favorite of mine. I made it exactly as written several times and it's great. Especially on a day when I forgot to take a meat out of the freezer!
11/17/2015
Childhood memories!! I love this. I was raised putting it over canned biscuits. Yum
03/25/2020
Thank you very much for sharing this recipe. My mom use to make it all the time when we were younger and I will be making it tonight for dinner. It is really good on toast and it goes well with egg noodles as well!
04/25/2018
Great easy, simple recipe. Two portions makes it for a more filling meal. Will make again.
11/19/2019
I was feeling a little under the weather and went searching for this recipe that I made back in the 70's! And here it is, just like i remember. So good. I added a tad of celery salt a a couple of peas. Thanks!
09/11/2016
This is the same recipe that I grew up on in the 50's that my mom would make and my children grew up loving as well. Im still making it today for my Grandchildren. The only thing we do differently is add chopped up hard boiled eggs. Yumm try it.
03/13/2018
Sorry, not my thing. I found it very bland. Tried adding lots of pepper, some seasoning salt and even some parmesan as others suggested after tasting it. Wasn't inedible, but won't be making again.
02/14/2020
My mom always added frozen green peas and served it over mashed potatoes. I prefer egg noodles. My kids loved it!
03/03/2020
My mother had to feed a family of 8 on a tight budget and this was a regular at our house. We always had it over biscuits with green peas on the side!
05/05/2017
This was ok. I added peas. There wasn't much flavor. It was pretty tasteless as is. It needs flavor from something.
05/14/2016
Very nice comfort food; altho a bit bland for our tastes. I finely diced some onion and sauted until soft, then added some fresh garlic and celery salt. I added this mixture to the sauce. Served over mushroom ravioli which was a delish combo. Brussel sprouts on the side. Will make again!
09/23/2019
Just added peas like my Nana used to do when I was little. I served mine on baked potato.
07/19/2020
Yummy when I added enough red pepper flakes! I made this recipe with butter, whole wheat flour, and almond milk (all doubled along with two cans of tuna) and then added the peas as well as salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes—all served over a bed of sour-cream-and-green-onion mashed potatoes. Lastly, I sprinkled a few sunflower seeds meats over the top.
05/17/2016
I also put frozen peas. I grew up eating this .
07/12/2021
Good, but needs more seasonings.
03/29/2021
It reminds me so much of my childhood. Thank you for sharing the recipe. It was perfect.
05/11/2022
I added 1/2 cup sour cream when adding tuna. Delish!
12/30/2021
This is a meal my mom always made us since as long as I can remember. It was always something I would ask for seconds of. (If there was any left.) I have been making it more recently because it truly reminds me of my mom. Her and I are not close at the time due to her alcoholism. She is unreachable most days and there is an empty place in my heart. But this meal makes it feel okay for just a moment.
10/19/2021
I did a search for Tuna & peas on toast which is in a white sauce This was a recipe that was a popular Lentin quick meal but also before those times this was also a "hard times" depression era meal It began with the SOS creamed chipped beef or even chicken and progressed to canned tuna once that became available ( some folk used Salt Codfish ) which was available mostly in Atlantic Canada & New England in those times This Particular receipe was strickly Creamed Tuna with no peas which is an integral Part of the deal, and yes i realized one can add corn or potato dices or carrots or clams or scallops or Chipped salted Beef and 2000 other ingredients
11/24/2021
Increased butter and flour to 4 Tbsp and added LeSueur peas like my Mom did.
12/09/2020
The recipe calls for about three times the amount of milk needed, unless you are making cream soup with tuna. I used one cup of milk with a large can of tuna and had to boil off liquid for ten minutes longer just to get it thick enough to even stay on toast.
03/06/2019
no changes to recipe! instead of toast, I used canned biscuits. both ready to eat at same time!
02/07/2017
I have been amazed to see that nobody else adds chopped boiled eggs to their creamed tuna! I usually double this recipe and add 4 chopped boiled eggs. Delicious, and an inexpensive way to add good protein and stretch and already an expensive meal I have been amazed to see that nobody else adds chopped boiled eggs to their creamed tuna! Are usually double this recipe and add for chopped boiled eggs. Delicious, and an inexpensive way to add good protein and stretch and already inexpensive meal
07/09/2018
Very good
04/25/2020
Pure comfort food! Grandma made it for breakfast with just tuna; for lunch, she added peas. I still love it both ways!
11/26/2016
Great for a supper on a busy day. Sauted some onion with the melting butter; used only a cup of milk to make the sauce. Added frozen peas and carrots, served over leftover corn muffins. Would work over leftover potatoes.
04/26/2020
Omg. Thank you for the recipe. It came out perfect. I added 2 can of tuna water and all. I will pour this over my tuna noodle casserole. My husband and son loved it.
04/11/2020
I too grew up with this in the 70s and 80s. My mom would make for our family of 6 especially during lent. We called it "tuna on toast." We never added peas but I can see where that would be a tasty add. What's great about this recipe is you can add whatever you like to suit your tastes/have on hand. I made this yesterday for our Good Friday lunch - added some minced onion and red bell pepper in the roux making process. Seasoned with Old Bay. Used 1 can of tuna (in oil, drained). Added a little Velveeta and a little shredded cheddar. We served over some toasted home-made bread. No complaints from the family. This is a super versatile and yummy recipe.

A favorite meal from childhood that I share with my own family. We make it with 4 5oz cans at a time so the recipe's quadrupled and slightly altered to taste. In a large pot, we melt 1 cube of sweet salted butter until it's a light golden color so it's sweeter, then blend the flour into 1 1/2 cups milk so it blends well in the melted butter in the pot over the lowest flame possible during the blending process. Stirring constantly with a whisk I add the milk flour mixture into the butter, continuing this as I slowly stir in the rest of the milk to the mix. That done, the tuna is added and stirred in a little at time, then whisked in until well blended on medium-high heat until it's bubbly. After that the heat's set to low and the pot is covered with an off-set lid so the pot can breathe without boiling over as the creamed tuna warms thru. We let it simmer about 20 minutes, stir well then turn the fire off and let it sit another 15 minutes & stirring well once more before serving on toasted bread. Salting, peppering & adding a pat of butter is to taste but this basic recipe is delicious every time.
02/20/2016
Mmm. Comfort food. We used to eat creamed canned peas on toast when I was young... Albacore Tuna was a treat haha Made this recipe tonight over potatoes. Only thing I changed was I used some Old Bay Seasoning and added some sautéed carrots and celery.
09/23/2021
Excellent! Added granular chicken boullion . So easy to make.
07/25/2021
Ok
02/03/2021
Old family fav from childhood, always sautéed diced onion in the butter first, my mother always used a can of evaporated milk & drained the water into the milk which adds extra flavor, add the frozen/thawed peas & tuna. After all finished & mixed together it also makes great base for a casserole with cooked noodles, top with Parmesan cheese & dried breadcrumbs and bake, 325 for about 20-30 minutes. Yummy, one of hubby's favorites also.
11/09/2017
Used 2 4oz cans of tuna and added a little minced onion, carrots and celery with the butter. Loved it and so did the kids!
05/26/2017
I like so many of the others grew up with this had 10 kids in the family and my mom had to make meals stretch the only thing different was she used corn starch instead of flour and although we had it on toast she would serve it over mashed potatoes
11/09/2018
Our go to favourite. We add a can of peas to complment the taste
07/27/2020
As close to my mom's as I guess I'll get with this recipe. It was a household staple on Friday's in our household because we couldn't eat meat on Friday's in the 1950's.
03/23/2020
My Mom made this with canned salmon. She served it over saltines or toast and we called it "Salmon Wiggle". It was a childhood favorite for sure !!!
05/06/2015
i love it. I balked at the idea of creamed tuna at first because I usually use chipped beef when I make a cream sauce. My fiancé suggested adding tuna instead. I like to mix it up between toast and chicken flavored rice. Very satisfying. I always add a cup of frozen peas, although next time, I may add a can of mushrooms and some corn as well as the peas
04/03/2018
I, too, ate this almost weekly as a child. I did change the recipe to improve. I sautéed diced onion in butter, added half of milk and all of flour in jar with lid and shook to combine. Added milk mixture to onion and butter, whisked to combine then added remainder of milk then whisked again. When thickened, added tuna, seasonings and frozen peas to taste. Served over hot biscuits. Cheap, easy and tasty.
03/11/2019
I did not use peas (didn't have any) but I will next time. I added a sliced hard-boiled egg.
10/19/2021
Tastes just like I remember. We eat it on mashed potatoes.
12/22/2020
I was looking for a simple dinner, using tuna, that was not a casserole using a "cream of" soup. This one was great! So easy to make. I served it over mashed potatoes. When the potatoes began to boil, I started the tuna mixture. Worked out great. For those of you who think that "cream of tuna" only goes with noodles, you have to try this! I used garlic salt and black pepper in the tuna mixture, to taste, and served with fresh bread on the side. I did put the peas in it. The Hard Times Creamed Tuna will definitely be made again and again here.
06/25/2022
You can't mess this up!
Loved it a s a kid and love it now as a pop!
And so dose the fam!!
05/04/2021
I've made this for 50 years, and it's just screams "comfort food" to me! Since Wondra Flour was invented, I make the white sauce according to the instructions on the Wondra shaker; once it's thickened to my tastes, I add the drained tuna. I serve mine over Chinese noodles for that extra crunch!
08/13/2020
We never had this at home, but it was served to us at school & it was always my favorite meal. I added an extra can tuna and added an extra cup of almond milk. I sautéed onion, celery in water, omitting the butter and added a tsp. of vegetable broth seasoning to up the flavor. This was then topped mashed potatoes. Husband's favorite.
09/24/2018
I made mine over garlic mashed potatoes with one red Hatch chili pepper. when I began, I poured about a cup of frozen peas into a strainer to defrost. I added the peas after adding the tuna. The liquid wasn't getting thick enough so I added about two shakes of arrowroot, prior to adding the tuna and peas. That worked perfectly! Would I make this again, absolutely!
06/05/2019
Very comforting...thanks for sharing this.
02/07/2017

My mom made this for me growing up. I still like to eat it but i use cream of mushroom soup instead of milk and flour. Its really yummy. I like to butter my toast before i pour the creamy tuna over it.
03/09/2017
Like taking a trip back in time to Mama's table in the 70's. Oh, how I loved that dish, and it's still just as delicious! A fun, fast, easy dinner. (Cut the recipe in half and skip the tuna to make a side dish - or snack - of yummy cream peas.)
01/20/2016
Delicious! An older cousin used to make this for me as a child and it was my favorite dish. Recently I was craving it as a comfort food but although there are versions using cream of mushroom or celery soup, they don't taste the same. In fact they're not worth making. But this is dish is perfect!! The only change I made was to use frozen corn as I didn't have peas. But otherwise I wouldn't change a thing. Thank you for sharing it.

This was a super easy and tasty recipe. Will make again!
03/23/2018
We in New England call this Tuna Pea Wiggle, served over saltines. Did not try it, but love the idea of adding a smidge of minced onion. Do add a pinch of garlic powder if you find is bland. This was a weekly meal when I was growing up in the 70's. One of my favorites.
05/21/2019
I will be making it again i se to have that when i was growing up. But now i will be making it more often. It is a very is recipe to make.
09/14/2015
On its face, sounded like a deconstructed tuna salad, but warm for cold winter nights. To test I cut the milk down 1/2 C but kept everything else the same. I added a slice of provolone to give it the tuna melt experience. Season generously!
07/07/2020
Love this. Made as directed but had to add peas at the end as nostalgia took over.
05/03/2016
Just like I used to have as a kid. Enjoyed it just as much. I did add frozen peas and put it over toasted Ezekiel Bread. Much better than Wonder bread. It stayed crispy!
04/03/2020
Had this many Friday nights when we couldn't eat meat. Mom always cut up some Velveeta or American cheese to melt in the sauce. Going to make it tonight.
08/01/2019
I added some steamed peas to it. Will do it again! DELICIOUS, EASY & QUICK!!
01/20/2019
I remeber this as a kid! I added 4 spring onions chopped and let them sweat with the butter before adding flour. I also added a can of peas, 2 boiled eggs crumbled and 1/4 cup sharp cheddar. Topped with paprika and parsley.
05/05/2021
I added peas and carrots and a half teaspoon of thick Worchester sauce.
03/15/2021
Oh my goodness. If this doesn't remind me of my childhood in the 50s and 60s. My mom made "Creamed Tuna on Toast" (minus the peas) quite often. On of my very favorites. Such comfort food.
